Individualised Living Options (ILO) with Kimberley Care Group
At KCG, we understand that there’s no one-size-fits-all approach to living independently. That’s why we’re proud to offer NDIS ILO as a home and living option, helping people across the Kimberley explore local, flexible housing options that support a meaningful life.
What is an Independent Living Option (ILO)?
Independent Living Options (ILO) are funded supports through the NDIS that help you decide how and where you want to live. This might mean sharing a home with a supportive housemate, living with a host, or setting up your own place with check-ins from friends, family or community. It’s all about building a home life that feels safe, stable and uniquely yours.
Your ILO plan should always reflect your long-term home and living goals.
How to access ILO through Your NDIS plan
Setting up an ILO takes time, and that’s a good thing. The NDIS has created a two-part process to help you find the right fit.
Step one: Exploration and design
You’ll work with KCG (or your Support Coordinator) to explore your options. Together, we’ll talk about:
- What kind of living setup suits you best
- Who you want around you for support or company
- What cultural or family connections you’d like to keep close
- What a good day looks like for you (and how to make more of them)
We then help you prepare a service proposal to submit to the NDIA for approval.
Step two: Implementation
Once approved, we move forward with putting your plan into action. We’ll help coordinate your supports, check in regularly, and make sure your ILO setup continues to reflect your needs and goals.

Who is ILO Best suited for?
ILO works best for people who want to live more independently, but still want support on their own terms.
It’s designed for NDIS participants who may not require 24/7 rostered care but still value having someone nearby to assist with daily tasks, routines, or companionship. It’s a great option for people who:
Want to move out of the family home
Prefer not to live in a group home
Have family or community connections they want to stay close to
Want more say over who’s involved in their care
KCG’s ILO model supports a wide range of cultural and community needs. ILO is also suitable for those who do not require specialist disability accommodation (SDA), but still want a tailored living setup that reflects their strengths and values.
What does an ILO look like?
No two ILOs are the same. At KCG, we work closely with you to design a setup that reflects who you are and what you value. Some of the common ILO options include:
Host arrangements
Living in someone else’s home as part of their household, often with a local family or trusted community member.
Living alone with check-ins
Having your own home, but with support from friends, family, or a housemate who checks in on you regularly.
Co-residency
A formal or informal support person lives with you either full-time or part-time.
Every ILO arrangement must be approved and included in your NDIS plan. We’ll help ensure that the setup you want is well thought out and meets the funding criteria.
What supports are included with ILO?
ILO funding is about supporting your way of living. This could include:
Help with daily living skills like cooking, cleaning or appointments
Emotional support and someone to talk to
Cultural activities, community events or connecting with Country
Support from family or community supports who live with or near you
Respite for your host, housemate or support person
Ongoing monitoring and backup planning
At KCG, we don’t just look at what you need help with; we look at who you are, what you enjoy, and how we can help you reach your goals.
How KCG supports you through ILO
When you're supported by the team at KCG, you’re not just getting a service; you’re joining a community that walks beside you.
We don’t use agency staff
You’ll get consistent, long-term support from people you know and trust.
We bring a team-based approach
You’ll be supported by a culturally diverse workforce, with local knowledge and local representation. We also have highly skilled professionals, such as psychologists, teachers, and nurses, working on the ground.
We work with you
We take time to listen to what matters to you, and build your ILO around your culture, lifestyle, and goals.
ILO vs SIL – What’s the difference?
ILO and Supported Independent Living (SIL) are both funded by the NDIS, but they support different ways of living.
ILO (Independent Living Option) |
SIL (Supported Independent Living) |
|---|---|
| Flexible setup, tailored to your preferences | Group home or shared support model |
| Based on informal and formal supports | Based on 24/7 professional support |
| Suits people who want more independence | Suits people who need high-level, ongoing care |
| Supports arranged around your lifestyle | Regular shifts and rostered staff |
ILO vs SIL: If you’re looking for more choice, independence, and a home that reflects you, ILO may be the right fit. If you require around-the-clock care and support workers on-site 24/7, SIL may be a better option. Talk to your Support Coordinator or planner to see what suits you best.
KCG’s ILO model supports a wide range of cultural and community needs. ILO is also suitable for those who do not require specialist disability accommodation (SDA), but still want a tailored living setup that reflects their strengths and values.
ILO FAQs
Does ILO funding include rent or utilities?
No, NDIS ILO funding does not cover rent, food or utilities. These costs are paid through your disability support pension or other income. ILO funding is there to support your living arrangement – this may include host payments, housemate support, or backup planning and monitoring.
How do I get started?
Start by having a conversation with your Support Coordinator or our team at KCG. You don’t need all the answers straight away. Exploration and Design funding gives you time to think it through.
And remember: your ILO setup may include both informal and paid supports, depending on what works best for you.
Not sure if we can support you?
The majority of our services are covered by NDIS funding, however we have been flexible with private supports and brokerage before. We also offer Veterans’ Affairs funding as an option.
